Describely.ai vs Writesonic: Which is Better for eCommerce?
In the niche of GenAI solutions, Writesonic is a popular name, mainly because of its extensive use cases. However, is it really the right solution for eCommerce, or are there better alternatives out there?
In this article, we’re testing Writesonic based on its feature list, pricing, user reviews, and much more, and comparing it with an alternative, Describely, to see how both tools fare when put under the spotlight when it comes to creating and managing eCommerce product content.
For the sake of transparency and accuracy: We’ve done our best to write and review the entire piece from an unbiased perspective, choosing to focus on a feature-by-feature comparison and growing sentiments in user reviews.
TL;DR (Key Takeaways)
Writesonic Overview
Writesonic is an AI writing tool, specifically created for marketers, known for its research and article writing capabilities. However, as a whole solution, Writesonic has the following products under its domain:

- AI Article Writer (This feature will write full-length articles for you. It can even consider specific keywords and configurations.)
- Photosonic and Audiosonic (These features generate custom art and audio based on your prompt.)
- Socialsonic (This feature analyzes the content that already exists on LinkedIn and creates new content for you.)
- Botsonic (You can use this feature to create custom chatbots for your website.)
According to Writesonic’s website, the company is trusted by over 30,000 teams around the globe.

User Reviews: Rated 4.7/5 on G2 and 4.8/5 on Trustpilot.
Support Options: Their support option is limited to emails. They also have plenty of resource materials to help you get started (e.g., “how to” videos, guides, and tutorials).
Describely Overview
Describely is an AI solution focused on eCommerce companies. As such, it helps them write, refine, enrich, and audit product descriptions in bulk.
Its parent company, Copysmith, has other AI writing tools under its domain, such as Frase (responsible for creating SEO-optimized long-form content) and Rytr (responsible for short-form copy for emails, ads, and social media).
Over the years, Describely’s been trusted by eCommerce giants like Target, UGG, Borsheims, HOM Furniture, and more, and has helped them improve efficiency and save thousands of hours in content production. (We’re not even exaggerating here, we truly saved 1000s of hours for a client.)
Presently, Describely has two distinct offerings:
- Do It Yourself (DIY): You can use Describely to generate product descriptions in bulk. You can also use the solution to enrich your product copies, optimize your content, source details from images, audit your content, customize your tone/style, etc.
- Get It Done For You: This is also known as the Concierge service — you can hand over your product information to the Describely team and we’ll create publish-ready descriptions for you, keeping all your requirements in mind.
Pricing: Custom pricing depending on the number of products.
User Reviews: Rated 5/5 on both ProductHunt and G2
Support Options: It primarily relies on email support, but has tons of support articles and video tutorials in its Knowledge Base.
Putting Both Tools To The Test
1. Content Repetitiveness
Most Gen AI tools rely on pre-existing online content, so a key test is whether they can generate unique, campaign-specific content.
To test this theory, we used Writesonic’s Product Description feature (which was tricky to find on the Home Page), and provided the tool with the necessary details:
For the first test, Writesonic came back with this description:
Unfortunately, we were less than impressed with the results for the following reasons:
- The description almost copy-pasted the product benefits under the “Key Features” section.
- There’s no strong CTA.
- The description also has some inaccuracies (e.g., “creamy texture” wasn’t in the prompt).
We asked the tool to give us a revised copy of the description to see how it compares and contrasts with the previous one. Here’s what the revised description brought us:
At first glance, it seems like the wording has been tweaked here and there, but the structure, format, and sentence meanings have remained fairly the same.
However, we wanted to rule out any possibility of errors on our side. For example, we assumed since this feature doesn’t require any specific mention of campaign requirements or information about your readers, it’s possible for it to create similarly-worded content.
So, we instead used the AI Content Agent on Writesonic to create audience and campaign-specific descriptions. For our first test, we presented the tool with the following prompt:
Based on this, Writesonic came out with the following description:
As for the second test (specific for Valentine’s Day), it presented this description:
Based on our observation, while there are a few tweaks here and there to meet campaign requirements, the structure/format/sentence meaning seems to be similar, so we wouldn’t rank Writesonic too high on content repetitiveness.
But, before we get too hasty, let’s compare Describely’s capabilities. Here’s the prompt we provided the tool with:
Fairly same as the one we gave Writesonic, right? Now, for the first generation (Christmas-themed), it came back with the following description:
For the second (Valentine’s Day) prompt, it came back with this description:
Here’s why we prefer Describely over Writesonic for content repetitiveness:
- Unafraid to play around with different structures/formats (e.g., the second description has bullet points and shuffled product information; the first description does not).
- Each description ends with a specific CTA.
- No additional information about the lipstick—it sticks to the product benefits mentioned.
2. Custom Rulesets/Brand Voice Stimulation
Both tools provide the option to customize your brand voice. In Writesonic, you can tweak your writing style by providing the tool with references (look at the image below for more context).
However, a small caveat we noticed with the tool is if you provide it with your blog URL (or any pillar pages), it cannot aggregate accurate results; it needs links to specific articles.
This is about where Writesonic’s style customization feature starts and ends. You can, in the next steps, name your style guide and provide some information about your brand.
In Describely, your brand voice and tone can be a little comprehensive. For example, you can:
- Create new rulesets to customize each detail about your product descriptions (from the way your descriptions are written, to what they should contain, which format they should adhere to, how many words they should use, etc.)
- Provide the tool with restricted keywords (e.g., if you’d prefer not to use Amazon-restricted keywords, competitor names, etc.).
- Showcase how your brand tone looks. (If you’re a brand that has multiple eComm stores under its domain, you can create different tones for each store, too.)
- Change output language for audiences in different countries.
- Create N number of Content Rulesets. For example, there can be different content rulesets for Christmas, Valentine’s, and New Years. When a new marketing event is on the horizon, you can ask Describely to bulk update all the descriptions in your catalog depending on the occasion.
3. Focus on Niche
As a Gen AI solution, Writesonic does anything and everything, and is not catered to a specific audience—just marketers in general.
As for Describely, it’s specifically created for eCommerce companies who want to create, edit, and refine product descriptions in bulk.
That’s to say, while both are Gen AI tools, they cater to different audiences and use cases, but are equally established in their segments in their own right.
However, for an eCommerce company, Describely may turn out to be the more suitable option as it has eComm-focused capabilities, such as:
- eComm-specific training data
- Product SKUs and catalogs for easy tracking
- Team invites and permissions (i.e., only the “Enterprise” subscription option in Writesonic allows you to add unlimited seats; otherwise your user limit is restricted to 1-2 folks)
- Event-specific content rulesets
- Product-dependent pricing
- Reporting features
- Extraction of product data from product images
4. Research Capabilities
When it comes to research, Describely’s capabilities are more targeted and product-focused — that’s to say, the software can source product information based on titles, SKUs, categories, materials, etc.
It can also consider specific product attributes during the time of research and can aggregate information from specific sites (e.g., your manufacturer or supplier’s website).
Compared to this, Writesonic can research topic clusters, keywords, and most searched-for user questions. This also means:
- Writesonic’s research can be comprehensive to almost every kind of topic, and not specific to products only.
- Its research comprises only keywords and questions, and doesn’t touch upon the meat of the content (e.g., its research cannot come back with a product’s benefits and dimensions, but Describely’s research can).
Unfortunately, we couldn’t identify how accurate Writesonic’s research is as we couldn’t track which tools and data sources it uses to find its information.
Another way Writesonic’s research capabilities stand out is by allowing you to target your research based on country and language.
5. Bulk Generation
In Describely, you can do the following activities in bulk:
- Generate, update, and refine your product descriptions.
- Find information about your products through data enrichment.
- Audit your copies (for grammar, inconsistencies, adherence to brand guidelines, and claims made).
In Writesonic, you can generate content in bulk, but only if you have a paid subscription. Its bulk capabilities only apply to article/content generation, and not any other activities.
6. SEO Tools
To make your content rank, you can use Writesonic’s research tool to identify the top-ranking pieces of content, keywords, and topics. Aside from this, Writesonic also has an “Optimize Content” feature which comprises of:
- SEO Checker (this feature provides a score of how your content ranks based on the usage of specific keywords, headings, paragraphs, and images).
- Content Gap Analysis (this feature is available only for paid users, and helps them integrate with GSC (Google Search Console) and Ahrefs to find how your article ranks against your competitors in content score).
In comparison, Describely provides the following SEO-related features:
- Keyword research (your results are categorized under neat sub-sections)
- Integrating selected keywords into your product descriptions (these can be the keywords you get from Describely’s keyword research or your own keywords)
- Creating metadata
- Analyzing how your content is performing through GSC
- Structuring and formatting your content based on custom instructions (these can be SEO-specific instructions, too, such as using X characters for meta descriptions or breaking up text)
You can learn more about Describely’s SEO features here: How Describely Helps You Create SEO-Friendly Product Content.
7. Content Audits
With any AI tool, there’s always a possibility of a few mistakes here and there. This is also why content teams are often encouraged to audit any AI-generated content before publishing it. However, the mark of any good Gen AI tool is how well it audits the content on its own to reduce editing time on your end.
In Describely, you can conduct content audit in these four areas:
- Grammar and misspellings
- Inconsistencies
- Adherence to brand voice/campaign requirements
- Accuracy of claims made in the copy
What’s even more impressive is that these audits can be done in bulk, so there’s no halt time for anything!
In Writesonic, there’s (at the time of writing this article) a beta feature for site audits — this analyzes your domain rating, traffic, and website health. While we cannot deny this feature is impressive in its own right (especially to get a holistic view of how your site is performing), there’s still a small flaw with it: It, again, does not get to the meat of the content.
That’s to say, it does not tell you if your pages have grammar issues, inconsistencies, inaccurate claims, or anything similar to that sort.
However, credit where credit is due: Both Writesonic and Describely will correct your reported issues with AI in a matter of seconds; no need to spend hours on end pouring over each recommendation made.
8. App Integrations
This is an area where Writesonic is a clear winner, as it has 7000+ integrations (read: it’s connected to most tools through Zapier). Compared to this, Describely has 8 app integrations.
But, because Describely is an eCommerce-focused platform, its limited integration list makes sense, considering it only connects to eComm stores like Shopify and WooCommerce and reporting tools like Google Search Console.
On the other hand, Writesonic is a go-to tool for marketers and needs more app connectors.
9. Ease of Use
We’ll have to rule in Describely’s favor when it comes to ease of use for the following reasons:
- It has an easy learning curve
- There are multiple resources (tutorials, newsletter, and support articles) on how to work around the tool
- All features are visible at a glance
- Neat, no-clutter interface
- Role-based permissions for easy collaboration
- History of recent activities
- Easy to find products through filtering of catalogs and SKUs
- Ability to extract product data from images
- Unlimited content generations
Unfortunately, because Writesonic caters to so many use cases, some of its features and capabilities are more difficult to find than others (e.g., we previously mentioned how you have to go to Home > Content Templates > Categories > Product Descriptions to create product content).
The solution also works on a credit-based system, where your subscription tier gets you X credits monthly. Keeping track of your credits is not only a burdensome task, but it also limits your content generation.
There are also some other issues:
- The tool can create its own information.
- Its document history is a bit difficult to find.
- Out of the four subscription tiers available, only one allows unlimited team members.
- Certain features are limited to a few subscription tiers (e.g., you cannot access the content grader or the custom data feature even if you have the paid, individual plan).
10. Content Security
Fortunately, both tools provide advanced security. For reference, Describely:
- Doesn’t use your product information for its training data.
- Encrypts your data and stores it on AWS (Amazon Web Services).
- Provides role-based permission and has multifactor authentication.
On the other end, Writesonic:
- Provides need-to-know access for its enterprise plans.
- Conducts tests on penetration security.
- Hosts your data on AWS and GCP (Google Cloud Platform).
- Encrypts your data and deletes your data history once your account expires.
There’s a small caveat, though: unfortunately, a bulk of Writesonic’s security features extend to only its enterprise plan. For example, admin controls, legal and security reviews, SSO security, account management, etc., are all only accessible under its Enterprise plan.
What Customers Have to Say
From our research, we gathered users love Writesonic for its extensive feature list, its application to multiple use cases, and its ready-made templates and prompts. However, they weren’t big fans of the way the product is priced (partly because of the heavy cost and partly because of its confusing credit-based set-up).
There were also certain features Writesonic clients hoped the team would implement, such as:
- Providing fact-checking tools or running content audits.
- Delivering more unique suggestions and content, instead of similar viewpoints.
- Being able to eliminate inaccuracies, in whichever rare instance they might appear.
As for Describely, here’s what customers love about the tool:
- Being able to consider specific brand guidelines before generating content.
- Their customer service, which has been very prompt.
- Its bulk feature extends to many use cases, not just content generation.
However, since the product is still new to the market, many users want to see how it’ll grow and what kind of updates and features it’ll bring.
Which Tool is Best For You?
Honestly, the answer depends on your use case and industry. If you’re a marketer and need an AI tool for anything and everything, Writesonic might be the answer for you, as it’ll allow you to create content for blogs, social media, newsletters, and everything else in between.
However, if you’re a part of an eCommerce team and need to create product descriptions that consider your brand guidelines and product features, and create/update content in bulk, you cannot find a better tool than Describely.
If you fit the bill for the latter and want to see how Describely performs IRL, we’ll recommend you get in touch with our team to find how our solution can help your eCommerce store specifically.
