AI Copywriting Tools for Product Descriptions: Describely or Jasper?
AI content generators should, in theory, save time when writing product descriptions. But to achieve consistent quality for hundreds of products, you have to plan for brand guidelines, data quality, tone of voice, keywords, and more.
Very few tools are made for eCommerce by default. The ones that don’t create more work to customize, research, and revise.
With enough testing, most AI platforms can be repurposed for basic eCommerce content. But are there actually any big box stores using tools like Jasper?
Jasper Overview
Jasper positions itself as the leading AI writing copilot. It’s an assistant that helps writers effortlessly create complex content campaigns, including use cases for different marketing channels.
While it claims to have dozens of use cases, only about five are relevant to eCommerce:
Let’s test the Product Description with this example: “travel watch roll case with 3 slots:”
With just the keyword, Jasper generated engaging product content, ready to publish. For product listings however, this format doesn’t work. To change it you would add more instructions on the left sidebar (similar to ChatGPT).
But what if you could do this by default without extra prompts?
Describely.ai Overview
Describely is AI product content software designed for eCommerce teams with large product catalogs. It takes care of not just the writing but the entire content process, from researching attributes to optimizing keywords —all in a few clicks, and for several products at once.
Describely aims to automate all forms of eCommerce content and specializes in bulk product description generation, enrichment, and auditing.
Here’s how it works:
Once you sign up for Describely, you have three ways to generate content:
For a quick test we’ll choose “Create product with AI” and add the previous example: “travel watch roll case with 3 slots.”
Describely generated a full-fledged description that follows the eCommerce best practices, and it only took one keyword.
Alternatively, you can create product pages manually or import them from Shopify, Salsify, a CSV, and even your PIM.
Now that you know how they work, let’s put them to the test!
Describely vs Jasper: eCommerce-Focused Comparison With Examples
Below we’ll use a few product examples to compare Jasper and Describely with five tests:
- Efficiency: What quality can you achieve using the simplest prompts?
- Bulk Generation: How many products can you generate or rewrite at once?
- Data Enrichment: Can you accurately find missing product data from official suppliers?
- SEO (keywords): Can you discover and apply keywords to the product content?
- SEO (Meta descriptions): Can you write concise meta descriptions that get clicks?
To pass the “test,” it’s important that the content isn’t repetitive, follows the instructions, and sounds like a person would write it— ideally in your unique tone of voice.
Let’s begin!
AI Copywriting for Product Descriptions
Before trying complex setups, we want to know what Jasper and Describely can do by default. For that we’ll type just this:
Example Prompt: blue light-blocking glasses
After a few tries, Jasper kept writing mini blog posts, so we added another rule to keep it shorter:
This one is similar to the very first example. Again, the quality is a pass. Great wording and no repetition, but it reads like a blog post. For product pages you want the full structure: headlines, description, bullet points, call-to-action…
Meanwhile Describely does this by default:
As seen above, we created an empty product page with the product name. After clicking Refine, Describely generated a full description. It rewrote the headline with more details. The content is concise and ready to publish.
Both AI tools have good quality for product descriptions, but Jasper needed more adjustments than Describely.
AI Copywriting for Generating Product Descriptions for a Large Backlog of Products (bulk generation)
The previous method only works if you have a few products. But what if you’re a brand like Target with thousands of new products per week?
You need bulk generation of course, but also content rules to ensure that the quality is consistent. Take a look at this example:
Example Prompt:
“travel watch case with 3 slots
travel watch case with 4 slots
travel watch case with 5 slots”
Can Jasper write unique descriptions for almost identical products?
Technically it created accurate content. The descriptions don’t repeat or include wrong information, but they don’t stand out either. Jasper paraphrased similar sentences for the 3 variations.
Note that we listed the three products in one prompt because Jasper doesn’t support bulk generation. So it’s not easily replicable for 10-100 items at once.
To bulk generate on Describely, select the products and components to create:
Within seconds, Describely generated these three descriptions:
Notice how each title differs. For each variation, the bullet points follow a different structure. The description has a different intro and call-to-action to stand out.
The same goes for AI meta descriptions in bulk: different every time.
It works for three as well as three hundred. Whether you want to refresh outdated product content or add new descriptions quickly, Describely has global content rules to generate content that follows your brand guidelines. (more on that later).
Jasper can realistically bulk generate about ten descriptions at best, but Describely can write even 1,000+ products at once.
AI for Enriching Products With Sparse Details (product data enrichment)
So far we’ve been testing with keywords alone, but the best AI content comes from detailed product prompts. And if you’re writing hundreds at once, not every product starts with the same amount of data.
For example, let’s say we’re reselling the “Women’s Recon Luxe Backpack” by TheNorthFace.
If you don’t have any other data, you’d need to search on supplier pages to find it (wasting time):
So let’s see if the AI writers can skip this step and find it automatically:
As you can see, Jasper quickly found the official website and retrieved the same specifications. It’s possible to do this for more products in one chat prompt, but it gets cluttered.
Again, no bulk generation available. But on Describely, it’s possible.
That’s why we’ll not only redo the example but also research three variations instead:
To do this on Describely, we just created three blank pages with the product names. Then, we set up the Data Enrichment:
In about a minute, the AI retrieved accurate data for all three products!
For reference, below you have (1) the official supplier description, (2) the data we extracted, and (3) a new description generated with it:
See the difference? Data enrichment makes the content a lot more specific than without, which often leads to more product sales.
Both tools have data enrichment capabilities, but only Describely can do it in bulk.
AI for SEO Optimization
The ideal eCommerce AI tool supports some form of SEO optimization. Otherwise the content might be great but not get views in the first place.
Now, Jasper and Describely are NOT traditional keyword research tools like Semrush and Frase. They can still brainstorm for keywords, but for accurate metrics you want to use them together.
With that said, let’s retest the watch case example:
As you scan through the content you’ll see many variations of the main keyword. This description could get you more keyword rankings, although of unknown volume. You could also paste your own keyword list for Jasper to insert them instead.
On Describely, the SEO process differs a bit:
You type the main keyword on the SEO tab. Unlike Jasper, here you can select only the keywords you want in the content. Once selected, generate, edit, and save.
And if you use separate tools like Frase to research keywords, you can paste them manually too.
Describely offers more flexible SEO tools to optimize product content including a Google Search Console integration.
AI for SEO-Optimized eCommerce Meta-Descriptions
Lastly, once your product descriptions are ready, let’s create meta descriptions to help them stand out on search. This could also be reused for website product blurbs (or for Shopify short descriptions).
Let’s stick to the previous example (“travel watch roll case with 3 slots”):
It’s basic and good enough to publish, but could it be better?
Both platforms mention keywords like “storage, travel, leather,” but Describely goes the extra mile with words like “luxurious” and “adventure.”
Both AI platforms are concise. However, Describely supports bulk generation for meta descriptions, which are also more specific.
Describely vs Jasper: Feature Comparison
You’ve seen what it’s like to generate product descriptions with Jasper vs Describely. But overall, which one is a better fit for your eCommerce team?
Here’s a quick overview of the quality, tone of voice, customization, ease of use, accessibility, languages, and pricing.
Product Description Quality
As shown in earlier examples, both tools write compelling, original content. However Jasper needs more adjustment because of the format.
For reference, here’s what a simple Jasper description looks like:
The example product is “Night Driving Glasses, Anti Glare, Polarized.”
If you add the same keyword on Describely, you get a ready-to-publish description with fewer instructions:
Another reason for this quality difference is the eCommerce-only design. Jasper is one-size-fits-all. Describely is just about product content. It follows the industry’s best practices by default.
That’s why Describely offers consistently better quality.
Tone of Voice
Both AI tools generated content that sounded natural. But does the tone of voice stand out compared to other products (manually written or not)?
On Jasper there are three methods for voice recognition, but it doesn’t let you directly write your own:
On Describely, you can both write and detect it with content samples:
What does it look like in practice? Here’s a contrast test for two tones on Jasper:
You can tell the second one is more “luxurious,” but the first one sounds generic. On Describely, we have:
You can notice a clear tone difference from the first sentence to the last—and so do potential buyers.
Describely did a better job at reflecting unique tones of voice.
Adherence to Brand Rules
Jasper seems* to make customization easy. You have a lot of room to write key features, structure, custom prompts…
But realistically, are you doing this product by product? Because unlike most AI tools, Jasper doesn’t save content rules. Either you generate them all on one page or rewrite the prompt for every product.
Describely solves this:
You can save unlimited catalogs and AI rulesets, which you can easily organize in commands.
If the AI uses a word you don’t like, you can change the ruleset within seconds and rewrite hundreds of listings again.
For example, you can load all these negative keywords for Amazon in one click:
Need to redo hundreds of outdated products? Add the keyword list to your content rules, and they’ll be ready in no time.
You won’t have to check every page or even go to your store. Describely integrates with PIMs and platforms like Shopify to directly update your catalogs.
Describely is easier to customize at scale than Jasper.
Ease of Use
Clearly Jasper is as easy as ChatGPT:
You write the product keyword with some format rules, and you get a product description with very few changes needed.
Editing is easy too when writing on the product description template. But you can’t edit content generated in the chat. It’s a big issue since it’s the only way to generate bulk content.
Describely is even easier to learn (even within a day):
You only need one keyword to generate product descriptions. The other features are straightforward too. Data enrichment, bulk generation, ruleset changes… select the products, select the tool, click Generate, and it’s done!
Describely has a lower learning curve than Jasper.
Accessibility
As an AI writing assistant, Jasper has a browser extension to generate content wherever you work:
The toolbar (“Jasper Everywhere”) can quickly load templates as if you’re writing from the platform.
Now, what about connecting Jasper to your online store?
We couldn’t find any integrations related to eCommerce (unless you use 3rd-party solutions like Zapier):
Normally, you’d work on a spreadsheet and import the products to the AI platform, but Jasper doesn’t support that either. You would have to generate the products from scratch in the AI writer, export them with Google Sheets, and import them at your online store (complex).
On Describely, you just press one button:
Within minutes you can load all your products from every storefront, organize by catalogs, generate in bulk, and instantly reflect changes on live pages.
Unlike Jasper, Describely seamlessly integrates with the main eCommerce platforms and PIMs.
Languages
Jasper supports 24 languages for AI prompts and over 30 for content translation:
And Describely supports the 12 most popular languages with very similar quality to American English.
Jasper AI currently supports more languages.
However, it didn’t perform well enough on the English examples to begin with. So what else can you expect from the other 30?
Pricing
Jasper ranges from $49 to $69 per month with payment details required for free trials:
The main difference is the limits for user seats and brand voice. As a marketing team you’re probably going for the Pro version instead, which has nice-to-haves like “knowledge assets,” image generation, and “campaigns” (essentially AI-generated media folders). But do these features actually help you save time on product content?
Both tools have similar ratings too. Jasper scores 4.2 on Trustpilot and 4.5 on Product Hunt. Describely scores 4.3 on Capterra and 5 on Product Hunt. The difference is, Describely reviews come from actual eCommerce teams (such as Target, Cotton On, UGG…).
The Verdict: What’s the Best AI for eCommerce Copywriting & Product Descriptions, Describely or Jasper?
There’s a lot that goes into eCommerce content than just writing product descriptions. Data research, SEO optimization, bulk generation, quality assurance, store integrations… All these little things—not just writing speed—are the secret to creating effortless product content at scale.
That’s why we recommend tools like Describely over Jasper. Jasper has a lot to offer for writers in general but isn’t so relevant for online stores. Instead, Describely helps eCommerce teams with industry-specific AI to meet product deadlines with ease.
